Coo-blimey! Pigeon’s treat as inquisitive bird photobombs town centre webcam

zombie-pigeon-apocalypse-moscow-2-510x600Everyone loves an animal photobomb – and now Rochdale has its own contender to be the ‘coo’-lest!

Seals, horses and squirrels have become overnight internet sensations and this Rochdale pigeon looks like it wants to join the party.

The inquisitive bird appears to be having a good look into the camera in Rochdale town centre, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The photo, taken from Rochdale Council’s webcam high above the town centre, was posted by hairdresser and former councillor Greg Couzens on the Rochdale Future Facebook page.

He posted: “The best Photo Bombed Ever?” much to the amusement of the other group members.

Greg added: “I posted this photo on the Rochdale Future Facebook site and within a very short period of time it received over 100 likes.

“It’s a real bird’s eye view of river development!

“It’s a great way to promote the webcam and keep up-to-date with the river opening development.”

The camera is situated on top of the Regal Moon pub and gives great views over the soon-to-be-uncovered River Roch and towards the town hall.

Deal Town Council agree to discuss making feeding pigeons littering offence

Deal Town Council agree to discuss making feeding pigeons littering offence

Pigeon PatrolThe leader of an anti-pigeon petition in Deal is appealing for help to make feeding the creatures an offence.

Sean Gabb, of Middle Street, and his neighbour Emma Lee have already called on Dover District Council to take swift and effective action to reduce the number of pigeons in Deal, by sending a petition with more than 200 signatures.

Dr Gabb attended Deal Town Council’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 23 to ask for councillors’ support in his bid.

Dr Gabb wants it to be an offence to feed pigeons
He asked them to use their powers to make it a littering offence to feed pigeons, under the district council’s new Public Spaces Protection Order.

This would put Deal in line with towns such as Swansea and Bolton.

Dr Gabb was supported by chairman of the Chamber of Trade, Peter Jull, who is keen to protect the buildings in the town.

Deal businesses who have already shown their backing include Merrygardens, CJ Howe, Hawkins Menswear, No Name Shop and Dunlin & Diver.

Councillors unanimously voted in favour of having the subject on the agenda of the next full council meeting on Monday, July 20 where they will be able to discuss the issue in full and decide on any action.

Cllr Ben Bano said: “I very much support this going on our agenda and to make it meaningful I think we should invite a senior environmental officer and the portfolio holder for public health to attend the meeting.”

Choa Chu Kang bird deterrent trial showing positive results: AVA

Choa Chu Kang bird deterrent trial showing positive results: AVA

Bird deterrent gel, Pigeon PatrolSINGAPORE: A trial involving the use of a gel substance to deter birds from roosting has been successful so far, said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore on Thursday (Jul 2).

Residents of a block of flats at Choa Chu Kang, where the trial is taking place, are also happy with the current situation, added AVA.

Since February 2015, rows of containers with a gel substance have been placed along the ledges of Block 755, Choa Chu Kang North 5. The gel is made up of a natural extract, meant to deter birds from roosting – which is a common complaint of residents.

There were 100 cases of feedback on bird-related nuisance from the Choa Chu Kang area in 2014, said AVA. But so far this year, AVA received just 10 cases of feedback on bird-related nuisance from Choa Chu Kang.

Said AVA’s Executive Manager of Animal Management (Operations) Department Janet Chia: “When they are going about their night activities, they feel affected by the noise (the birds) are generating. Another thing is that, some of the birds soil the ledges. And it also created a smell nuisance for them.”Bird-control-Gel Pigeon patrol

In May, AVA surveyed residents in the block on the trial. A majority of them found the bird-control method to be effective. Some of them said they want the gel to be a permanent feature.

AVA said it will continue to monitor the trial.

“If it is effective and suitable, in terms of feasibility to deploy at most of the locations with such bird issues, we will work with relevant stakeholders to see how we can deploy this at other sites,” said Ms Chia.

AVA said it takes a multi-pronged approach to manage the bird population in Singapore. This means coordinating with Town Councils, Government agencies and the public.

Besides the gel, AVA also uses of a range of measures to address the bird nuisance. These include enforcement against pigeon feeders and selective pruning of trees to temporarily deter birds from roosting.

Kevin Kiermaier singles in a run, gets attacked by a pigeon

640Kiermaier070415The Yankees and Rays played a wild extra-innings game on Friday night, with the home team getting a walk-off win on Brian McCann’s three-run home run (NYY 7, TB 5). Victory from the jaws of defeat.

The Rays scored two runs in the top of the 12th to take the lead. Outfielder Kevin Kiermaierdrove in the first run of that inning with a single. Once he got to first base, a pigeon attacked:

I guess the pigeon was just sticking up for its team, you know? Most pigeons mind their own business in New York. Mess with the Yankees though, and the birds will get you.

Tough pigeons won’t be scared off by hawk

Tough pigeons won’t be scared off by hawk

Pigeon Patrol

Pigeons in Hemel Hempstead are so tough that even a potentially deadly hawk cannot scare them away.

Council chiefs have revealed that a three month trial using the bird of prey to ward off the nuisance birds in the town centre has not worked.

And it’s people feeding the pests that is fuelling the problem.

A spokesman for Dacorum Borough Council said: “Pigeons in the town centre create a nuisance for many residents and retailers and we are continually looking at ways to manage the population, which is growing because there is a significant and constant source of food for them in the town.

“We ask that the public don’t feed the pigeons as this encourages them to stay in the town.”

The trained hawk is meant to scare off the pigeons and is fed before taking flight so that there is no incentive to try and kill any of the birds for food.

Now the council is investigating other ways to control the pigeon population.

The spokesman said: “The main reason the hawk hasn’t worked is due to the availability of food in the area, as the public are feeding the pigeons.”

Although the hawk trial has been unsuccessful overall, the council, which was unable to give figures on the number of town centre pigeons, reports that the population has decreased but that it is not significant enough to justify the cost of the hawk flights.

Back in 2008, a similar hawk scheme was tried in the town centre but shortly after arriving the bird made a bid for freedom and was reported to be living wild.

It cost the taxpayer £9,000 and also caused controversy when shoppers including children watched in dismay as a hawk attacked a duck.

The bird, worth thousands of pounds, was eventually tracked down.

Swansea Council has joined forces with city centre businesses to launch a poster campaign which advises people about the perils of dropping food on the ground and attracting the attentions of pigeons and seagulls.

Litter enforcement officers can issue £75 fixed penalty notices to people who dump their unfinished snacks on the ground for gulls to peck at.

The council’s cabinet member for environment and transport Mark Thomas said: “Over the last year, since the introduction of littering enforcement and the Tidy Swansea campaign we’ve seen an improvement in the littering situation as a whole across the city.

“In the city centre there’s been a marked rise in the amount of cigarette stubs being put in bins and that’s led to bins needing to be emptied more frequently which is great news too.”

But he said birds were messing up the city centre.

“Gulls and pigeons are a real nuisance because of the way their droppings make a mess on shops, street furniture and — sometimes — lands on people too.

“There have even been cases where people have been attacked by gulls in the city centre for their snacks.

“That’s why we want people to feed the bins and not the birds this summer. It’ll discourage pigeons and gulls from coming into the city centre and it’ll improve the environment too.”

Swansea is not the first city to introduce fixed penalty notices for food littering or for feeding the birds.

Similar schemes are already in force at many seaside resorts because of the effect they have on tourists and on the environment.

Mr Thomas added: “The restrictions have also been introduced in popular destinations like the city of Bath as well.”

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea Business District (Bid) said: “We have a lot of food related businesses in the city centre and feedback from the business, large and small, has been that feeding the birds creates numerous issues for them and their customers such as the birds stealing food.

“They also leave a mess behind that impacts on the visitor experience and trading environment.”
