Dozens of pigeons packed in a cardboard box were found last month inside a rest stop trash container along Interstate 65 in western White County.
According to a story from the Associated Press, Indiana State Police released a statement Thursday about the Dec. 10, 2018, incident. About 60 pigeons were “packaged” in boxes and left as garbage at the rest stop near mile marker 196. They were discovered by Trooper David Vido.
With the help of Kim Hoover, a wildlife rehabilitator from Pulaski County, and Kelly Thomas, vice president of “A Critter’s Chance,” a nonprofit based in Plainfield that specializes in exotic/domestic pet rescues, about 57 pigeons were recovered from the trash bin.
Hoover told the AP the pigeons most likely came from a homing pigeon race, where the birds are taken to a designated location and fly back to their roost. Hoover said it is rumored to have large sums of money tied to betting on when and if the pigeons will return.
